Can an employer give a bad reference in the UK?

I fear my previous employer will give me a bad reference because I didn't work the notice period due to personal circumstances.

I read many things but still cant sure if they can provide bad experience or not?

Employment Law / Can employers refuse to give a reference?

Do employers has to provide a reference for you? can they refuse to give you a reference?

Basically employers have to give you a reference if:

  • there was a written agreement to do so
  • they’re in a regulated industry, like financial services
And when they do that:

They must be accurate
They can also be brief, just starting and leaving dates, job title and salary.
