Summer jobs are a great way for anyone to earn some extra cash, whether youíre a student on a break from university or further into your career but out of work right now.
There are tons of summer jobs out there just waiting for someone to snap them up, so hereís my guide to finding the best jobs on offer, and a list of job ideas for those who know they want to earn some money but arenít sure where to startÖHow to Find Summer Jobs
Finding summer jobs is similar to finding any job, be it full time or semi-permanent. Here are my top tipsÖ
1. Start Looking Early
. Most companies will start searching for summer staff as early as April or May, so start looking and applying before the summer season. This ensures you have a good choice of jobs to apply to rather than being left with only the roles no one else wanted to fill!
2. Ask Around
. Donít be afraid to ask your friends or family to look out for any summer vacancies that might be suitable for you. Any of them in employment can ask at their own place of work if they are going to be taking on extra summer staff, and put in a good word for you. You may even be able to apply for summer jobs before the general public hears about them!
. There are loads of job sites out now that specifically have a database full of job vacancies just waiting for you to take a look through. There are even websites tailored specifically for seasonal job vacancies, so itís a great way of seeing all your possible options in one place.
. Itís an old fashioned way of looking for any sort of advertisements since the internet was invented, but donít underestimate the number of companies who still post vacancies in their local paper.Popular Summer Jobs for All Ages
There are so many job vacancies out there that itís hard to write a compiled list of only a few, however here are some of the more popular ones that tend to be easiest to find in summerÖ
1. Food Industry
. Almost all restaurants and cafes will employ tons of new hands over the summer season to deal with the amount of business they get, due to tourism or simply people wanting to go out more when the sun is shining! They offer a wide range of opportunities such as working in the kitchens in food preparation, waiting or even just cleaning. For waiting in particular youíll need excellent people skills as youíll be interacting with customers on a day to day basis, but it comes with the added benefit of earning above and beyond your standard wage thanks to customer tips!
. Finding summer jobs in retail is relatively easy if you know where to look, as again they employ extra summer staff to deal with the business they get over the summer season. Youíll likely get offered one of a number of different positions including shelf stacking, floor assistant or stock-taking, and youíll need good people skills to work directly with customers every day.
3. Call Centre
. Call centres are always in need of more hands, especially in the summer season when theyíre busier than ever! Youíll be required to be polite over the phone, as well as patient and confident in what youíre selling; however, direct people skills arenít required so if youíre a bit shy but happy talking over the phone, this is the job for you!
4. Admin Work
. This can involve a number of different activities, including answering phones, filing paperwork and helping employers with their own work. This isnít a hard job to do right, but looks great on any CV as it shows you have confidence, organisational skills and experience working in an office environment.
