Finding Job Vacancies In Finance
« on: January 01, 2013, 02:16:26 PM »

Whether you are planning on changing your current career to finance, or you already work in finance and just want to change companies, it can be hard finding job vacancies in the field.

Most job vacancies in finance will be advertised in the same usual ways as jobs in other sectors, including in newspapers and online, so to begin your job hunt ensure you buy and read the local paper, and check out all the job sites that you can think of.

However, here are some additional tips that can help you to break into this hard-to-enter job sector…

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Around

Another reliable method is to simply ask around! Ask any friends/family that work in finance, or even those that don’t as all companies have at least one financial expert employed to work with their accounts. Any of them might have heard of a vacancy going in their own workplace or another that hasn’t been properly advertised, that you’d never otherwise find out about.

Use Your Contacts

Knowing people who work in the field can be invaluable as they can tell you of any job vacancies they have heard of near them, and they can also talk about you in a fantastic light to their boss when it’s time to take on new recruits!

Try giving them your CV and have them hand it in to their boss or senior staff in their company, or ask your friend to have a read of it and suggest changes that might help you get work in the field – they work in it and know what’s required, after all.

Any kind of contacts you have within the financial market will probably also know about job openings before they are advertised to the public, so you can have the chance at applying before anyone else.

Reading the Financial Section

Reading the job section on the newspaper is an obvious way to find jobs, but don’t forget to also read the financial pages to stay up to date on the world of finance – this will ensure you can make and hold good conversation at job interviews and impress potential employers! You can also do this from listening to the financial news, or looking online at recent activity in the finance world.

Try To Gain Experience

Try to get any work experience possible in the field of finance, whether that be volunteering at a financial company or writing financial blogs online; this will give you a financial based addition to your CV and will give you much higher chances of getting the job than someone with no financial experience whatsoever.

If you have no prior experience in the sector and go up against someone who does, the choice for the job probably will not be you unfortunately! Financial work experience also shows that you have a genuine passion for the sector, and all bosses want enthusiastic employees!

I find that a lot of the finance jobs are advertised in the Broadsheets rather than the locals etc.  Online would be good too but you need to know where to look, as not all firms use the same sites
