My first tip would be to get out there and look.  Do not expect the job to come to you.
Write letters & emails to companies in Manchester that you would consider working for.
Make phone calls, visit companies and take along your CV
Look on local job sites, and visit the job centre regularly

I think that the more different ways you try to find a job, the better chance you have of getting one. For example if you only rely on online listings, you may be missing out on all jobs that are advertised in the windows of shops. You should also ask friends and family if they have any contacts who could help you out, as there are many people who get jobs this way.
