Administrative Assistant Interview Questions and Tips

If you have been offered an interview for an Administrative Assistant then you will need to be experienced in admin work consisting of typing, filing, organising documents, ordering stationery and equipment, dealing with queries etc.
You will need to be a very organised person who provides help and support to a department or a team in administration terms.

If you are ready to go to your interview, you need to do enough research about the company and the job role. Normally you can find a lot about a company by looking on their website and you need to research this carefully so that you can answer questions on the company when you are asked.

You also need to take the job description and your CV and see what skills you are confident of doing and what you need to pay a bit more attention to. This way it stops any embarrassing questions during an interview.

Always dress professionally to any interview, no matter how relaxed others seem to dress, you are still creating your impression to your interviewers and it is important to arrive looking very smart.

Administrative Assistant Interview Questions

You could be asked questions during your interview such as:
  • How competent are you on Microsoft Office packages?
  • How much working knowledge do you have of Excel?
  • How confident are you on the Telephone? Tell me about some calls that you have made in a professional capacity in the past?
  • How would your previous Manager describe your work attitude?
  • What projects and work have you been used to using on Word and Power point, please give examples?
  • Why do you think you are the right person for this position?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • Tell me about yourself
  • What makes you better candidate than others?
  • What motivates you?
  • What is your experience in dealing with confidential documents?
  • Can you describe a time when you have to work in a multi-disciplinary team?
  • What is your weakness?
  • What are your strengths?
  • How do you deal with a difficult client?
  • Describe a situation where you worked under pressure
  • Example of problem solving in previous jobs whereby you got to the bottom of the problem quickly
  • How well do you perform under pressure
  • Why do you want to work with us?
  • Describe a time when you worked with difficult people
  • Do you know what your typing speed is?
  • How would you go about stocking up on stationery for the office?
  • How would your previous Manager or colleagues describe your communication skills?
  • Have you taken notes/minutes during a meeting and what kind of meetings?
  • Where do you see your role in terms of an office structure?
  • How do you keep information private and confidential from your colleagues?
There are various questions that you could be asked during your interview so it is important to know your CV inside out as well as their job description and any research or other company information that you can find. Your interviewer will be looking to assess if you can fit into their team and company and make a difference to the gap they feel that they have in the company.
