BT have announced their proposals to create over 1,000 new engineering jobs installing household fibre-broadband connections to new and existing properties. 

400 of the newly recruited posts will be apprenticeships on a 2½ year scheme. This news comes after confirming they have already employed an additional 1,500 engineers in the past 12 months bringing the current total employed on the fibre build up to 5,000.

The UK government is funding much of the construction in rural areas where BT has so far won all of the contracts to deliver their Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project.  Plus demand for improved internet speeds continues to grow in urban areas.

BT hopes that 200 of the newly announced jobs will go to those retiring from the armed forces.
The apprentice scheme, of which there will be 400 new positions during this recruitment wave, has been oversubscribed at a rate of 40 applicants for every vacancy to date.  New trainees will receive formal training in maths, English and technology as well as spending up to a year working for BT's Openreach business installing new connetions before going on to other engineering tasks.  After the two and half years apprenticeship they can expect to receive diplomas.
